I have been keeping Proverbs 1: 10 – 15 close to my heart lately. It begins, “My child, if sinners entice you, do not consent.” And it ends, “My child, do not walk in their way; keep your foot from their paths.” 

I pray this for myself, my children, and the politicians I long to admire. I long for the day when public opinion polls don’t dictate a person’s actions. I look to vote for someone who makes decisions based on their values and beliefs rather than succumbing to popular opinion. 

But I also know it starts with me, with all of us. We are each called to be authentic in how we live our lives. Therefore, I seek to live out the wisdom of another Proverb, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverb 4:23).
