If we are not self-aware, we can approach someone with a differing opinion with an arrogance that assumes we know more than they know. We convince ourselves that we have insight that someone who thinks different from us does not have, which forces us to talk when we should instead be listening.
Too much arguing happens when we beat each other over the head with locked and loaded mental suitcases filled opinions. A better approach would be agreeing to sit down and unlock the suitcases and have conversations with one another about what is in each suitcase.
In doing so, we may find that some of the items we have had locked up for so long have grown moldy and not as accurate as we once thought.
It is amazing what happens to our opinions when held up to the light of truth.
