If we are honest with ourselves, we will admit that there are some people that we feel doesn’t deserve God’s love. There are some that we don’t want God to love. “Love your enemies” is too inclusive for us.

And yet, Jesus says, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” I can give you a series of practical reasons as to why you should not carry around hate in your heart. I can tell you that it is bad for your health. I can remind you that the time you spend hating those who have hurt you is simply giving them power over you. I can tell you that you need to love your enemies because it proves you are a better person than the scum bag that set out to hurt you. All of these are great motivators for loving those who we consider our enemy. The problem is that you will not find any of those reasons in this scripture. Jesus calls us to love our enemies because it is the character of the God we follow.
